History of Judo

Judo, literally translated as the "gentle way", was created in Japan in 1882, by a young university professor named Jigoro Kano. Dr. Kano wanted to institute a new style of physical education compatible with the new public education system in Japan. Therefore, he created Judo by adapting different elements from the ancient Japanese martial art Ju-jutsu.

Dr. Kano based this new system on two basic principles:

  • Maximum result with minimum effort (efficiency);
  • Mutual growth and wellbeing.

Judo teaches one to overcome one's opponent without injury or harm.
Dr. Kano maintained that "Judo is a life lesson that teaches us to avoid traps and overcome obstacles".

Kodokan, the school where Dr. Kano first taught Judo still exists today. Located in Tokyo, it is considered the world's centre for Judo and attracts thousands of judokas each year.
