Levels and Belts

Ceinture se dit OBI en japonais

The belt worn by judokas indicates their level of proficiency and symbolizes 3 values:

  • The moral value (Shin)
  • The technical value (Ghi)
  • The physical value (Taï)

 

Once a black belt is achieved, further belt levels are no longer awarded by the judo club but by the grading commission of Judo Quebec and validated by Judo Canada.

Yellow 5th Kyu Gokyu
Orange 4th Kyu Yonkyu
Green 3rd Kyu Sankyu
Blue 2nd Kyu Nikyu
Brawn 1st Kyu Ikkyu
Black 1st Dan Shodan
Black 2nd Dan Nidan
Black 3rd Dan Sandan
Black 4th Dan Yodan
Black 5th Dan Godan
Red/White 6th Dan Rokudan
Red/White 7th Dan Shichidan
Red/White 8th Dan Hachidan
Red 9th Dan Kudan
Red 10th Dan Judan

Bicolor belts are also given to young judokas to mark their progress.

Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, is the only person ever awarded with a double-wide white belt, this given post-humorously, it represents the Junidan level or 12th Dan.
